That&#8217;s exactly the question <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/food\/\" title=\"SBS TV - Food\" target=\"_blank\">SBS TV<\/a> invited me to answer &#8211; I was fortunate enough to be asked to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/food\/article\/2014\/10\/23\/celebration-diwali\" title=\"My Diwali article on the SBS Food website\" target=\"_blank\">write an article for them<\/a>, as well as contribute a few of mum&#8217;s famous Diwali recipes for their extensive Food section! You can imagine how excited I was at the prospect of being a proper, published writer &#8212; and even moreso when they invited us along to the photoshoot! Blend with a food processor to ensure it has an even consistency.<\/p>\n<p>In a large pot, add the sugar and water and allow to dissolve. Stirring occasionally, let it simmer over medium-low heat until you have a thin, sticky syrup. (Be careful with the consistency of the syrup. It should be tacky enough to stick to your fingers, but not as thick as honey. A syrup too thin will result in burfi that does not solidify, and too thick will make the burfi too hard.)<\/p>\n<p>Add the milk mixture, butter, and flavouring to the syrup and stir until combined. Let it cook for 5 minutes on low heat, taking care not to burn it. Pour into a 33x23cm baking tin and allow to cool. Or, pour into a prepared mini cupcake tray for bite-sized morsels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/burfi2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/burfi2.jpg\" alt=\"in the pursuit of | Vanilla &amp; Coconut Burfi\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/burfi2.jpg 580w, https:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/burfi2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/burfi2-449x300.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--As an Indian girl born in South Africa, and raised in Australia, I'm sure you can understand the sort of identity crisis that comes from having such a colourful background.\n\nIn fact, it was only in my mid-twenties that I finally came to terms with my Indian heritage, and just a few months ago that I understood the bond that comes with such cultural ties. The support of a community are distant memories from my childhood, reignited thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/sugarpopblue.com.au\/blog\/2014\/05\/durban-safari-paris\/\" title=\"47. Highlights of Durban, Safari, & Paris\" target=\"_blank\">a recent trip back to South Africa<\/a> earlier this year. It had been 13 years since I last visited, and since I last shared in the warm embrace of uncles, aunts, cousins, great-aunts and great-uncles, nieces and nephews. \n\nSo this Diwali, I proudly celebrate my South-African-Indian-Australian heritage with the family members that I am fortunate enough to have here in Sydney; my husband, my parents, my sister and her family, and my brother. We will be twirling sparklers in the garden, and bringing light to our houses with oil lamps and candles. There will be food a-plenty as we muse on the year past over dinner, and welcome in the Hindu New Year with love and laughter.\n\nThe community also hosts amazing Diwali Shows; children acting out the story of Diwali on-stage (similar to the \"Story of Christmas\" often performed at end-of-year school functions), elders enjoying the traditional folk dances \"Gurba\" or \"Dandia Rass\", --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does an Indian, ex-pat-South-African celebrate Diwali in Australia?
